When should you start Fertility Acupuncture?

It is never too early to start acupuncture for fertility . . .

  • Are you just starting to look for a way to naturally improve your health and fertility?

  • Have you been trying to conceive for some time?

  • Are you about to head down the path of IVF?

  • Have you recently had an unsuccessful IVF cycle.?

Some people seek out acupuncture if they are having trouble conceiving., others as they start IVF, others if they found IVF didn't work. Eggs take several months to mature so starting to work with a fertility acupuncturist a few months before seriously trying to conceive can improve your natural hormone regulation and increase circulation to your ovaries and uterus. This has the potential to make a difference to the health and vitality of the eggs. If you want to use acupuncture to support IVF, it will have the greatest impact if you have regular acupuncture over the 2-3 cycles prior to egg harvest.. In a perfect world, the acupuncture  alone will be enough to encourage your body to fall pregnant naturally, but at the very least evidence suggests it can improve the chances of a successful round of IVF.

It is not just women who can benefit from front-loading their IVF with acupuncture. For men with a borderline sperm test, a course of acupuncture over 2 months prior to IVF can boost sperm quality to the point that ICSI is no longer necessary. ICSI has been shown to increase the risk of male offspring inheriting the father's fertility issues so it is good to avoid ICSI if possible.

If you have already started IVF, or are due to start imminently the main focus of treatment will be to support you emotionally, to keep your stress hormones in check and to keep your general vitality levels up - the IVF hormones take care of follicle stimulation and the endometrium thickening. Having a good working relationship with your acupuncturist can be a huge help through the ‘two week wait’, you will find Acupuncture helps to really soothe your nerves, it keeps you calm and encourages your body to behave appropriately.

if you have had to cope with recurrent implantation failure, had to struggle through the shock of ectopic pregnancy or had to struggle through miscarriage you will find acupuncture can be incredibly supportive for the emotional pain that is part and parcel of a difficult fertility journey.  We eat the right diet, take the recommended the supplements, go for all the required blood tests and scans, repeatedly inject ourselves – these are all things that can help with the physical side of infertility. However many of us don’t know what we can do to ease the emotional impact but that is a situation for acupuncture can be so incredibly helpful.

So when I am asked when it would be good to think about fertility acupuncture, I always reply ‘Now!’.

There is never a better time to start.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now.
